Snag is a dead or dying tree that remains standing with a lot of life still dependent on it. Snags provide food, perches, and nesting sites.

Nearly 40 Florida bird species nest in tree cavities, as do squirrels and bats. Nesting boxes can serve as an alternative to the cavities in snags where none occur naturally.
